The short version

What she hears, and where it goes.

01 — Who

Who we are

ALICE is a voice copilot for Star Citizen, made by Jeff Feenstra, Lübeck, Germany. Jeff is the data controller for the personal data described here. Contact: privacy@heyalice.help.

02 — What

What ALICE processes, and why

Your voice

While you hold your push-to-talk key, ALICE records from your microphone. A speech-recognition model (Whisper) running on your computer turns the recording into text. The audio isn't sent anywhere and isn't saved. ALICE only records while the key is held.

Your keyboard and controllers

ALICE watches for the push-to-talk and overlay keys you choose, on your keyboard or your joystick/HOTAS, and acts only on those. It doesn't record, store or send any other input.

Conversations

ALICE sends the text of what you say to our server at api.heyalice.help over an encrypted connection. It sends along ALICE's earlier replies and the trade data she needs to answer, such as your current trade run. The server passes this to an AI model, which writes ALICE's reply. The reply text then goes to a speech service, which turns it into her voice. Most of the time both run on hardware we own. When that hardware is busy or offline, the server uses a hosted provider instead (see Who else handles it). Our server relays the text but doesn't save it.

ALICE also keeps a transcript of your conversations, a log of each turn's timing and cost, and two troubleshooting logs, on your own computer (in %APPDATA%\ALICE). alice.log is a running log of what ALICE did and printed, and it includes the text of what you said and ALICE's replies. freeze.log holds technical stack traces, written only if ALICE stops responding or crashes. These files aren't uploaded, and you can delete them at any time. If you send one to us for support, that is your choice.

Your account

You sign in with Discord. We receive your Discord user ID. While ALICE is in beta, we also check that you're in the ALICE Discord server and have the beta role. We store only your Discord user ID and the date you first signed in. We never receive your email address or password, and we don't keep your Discord access token after the check.

Your trade ledger

When you log a trade run, we store it so ALICE can track it between sessions: the ship, terminals, commodities, quantities, prices, fees, and the time of each step. It's in-game information, linked to your account.

Usage and cost records

For every AI and speech request, we record your account, the model or voice used, how many tokens or characters it took, how long it took, whether it worked, and what it cost us. These records contain no conversation text. We use them to keep ALICE affordable, set fair usage limits, and plan capacity.

Technical data

Like any web server, ours sees your IP address. Our web server logs record IP addresses and the pages or endpoints requested. Our application logs record errors and refused sign-ins (with the Discord user ID). ALICE's update check asks heyalice.help for the latest version number. On first launch, ALICE downloads its speech model from Hugging Face. Both requests reveal your IP address to the server they go to.

03 — Basis

Legal bases (GDPR)

WhatLegal basis

04 — Who else

Who else handles it

These services help run ALICE. Each one receives only what it needs for its job.

Our own model and speech hardware is a machine we run in Germany. It isn't reachable from the internet, only from our server over a private, encrypted link.

Under their API terms, Anthropic and ElevenLabs don't train their models on API data by default. They may keep it for a limited time (typically up to 30 days) to detect abuse. Transfers to US providers rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified, and on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses otherwise.

Trade prices and game data come from UEX. Our server makes those requests itself, so UEX receives none of your data.

06 — Your rights

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete your account and everything linked to it, or object to how we use it. Email privacy@heyalice.help and include your Discord username so we can find your account. We'll answer within one month. If you're in the EU or the UK, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.

If you live in California or another US state with a privacy law, the same rights apply to you. We don't sell or share your personal information for advertising.

08 — Everything else

Children, changes, licenses

Children

ALICE isn't meant for children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their data.

Changes

If we change how ALICE handles your data, we'll update this page and its date. We'll announce significant changes in the ALICE Discord server before they take effect.

Open-source software

ALICE is built on open-source software. Every component and its license is listed in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt. The same file is in ALICE's install folder, matching the exact version you have installed.
